ABOUT THE AUTHOR,
When I was arrested for the third time shortly after my fifteenth birthday, I was placed in handcuffs, and taken to the police station.
An adjudicator told me that I would be dead or in prison by the time I was twenty.
A failure in almost every way imaginable, I promised myself then that one day I would have value and prove that I was more than a punching bag who could be beat on, kicked around and forgotten.
It was a long path filled with many heartbreaking failures that I had to pick myself up from to finally find my purpose and actualize the seemingly insurmountable promise I made to myself when all I had was a thin strand of hope and a barley lit spark of belief that I could make something of my life.
Through the work of the Goliath Foundation, I have fulfilled the promise I made when all I had was the guts to pick myself up and choose to be more than what I was, or what was expected of me, and in time, help others to do the same.
KILLING GOLIATH - The Day I Tried to Live
Imagine being trapped at the bottom of a dark hole so deep you can barely see the light. You’re treading water, exhausted, knowing if you stop moving - you drown.
That was my life in the summer of 1995. I’d just won back my rights as a father after a brutal custody battle, only to have my three-year-old daughter taken from me. My mother was dying in a hospital. I was broke, sleeping on couches, recovering from a work injury, and using anything I could-booze, cocaine, violence-to silence the pain.
Every day, a voice in my head whispered that I was a failure, that the world would be better off without me. But somewhere beneath all that noise, a single thread of hope refused to snap. That thin strand became my lifeline, the one I used to climb out of the hole, find solid ground, and begin the long fight back toward peace, love, and purpose.
The Day I Tried to Live is the first book of the Killing Goliath trilogy - a story about the monster inside us all, and the moment we decide to fight back. Below is a sample chapter.
